Liyana is a 2017 swazi documentary film directed and produced by aaron kopp and amanda kopp, following a group of swazi orphans as they construct a narrative based on their own experiences. Liyana is a documentary about a group of orphans from swaziland (nowadays eswatini) who come up with an original african story in a series of workshops by south african author and activist gcina mhlope.

Set in the beautiful country of eswatini (formerly swaziland), the orphaned children build and transform their story of liyana in ways the imagination and those with deep, challenging lives only can. Drawing on experiences from their own lives, the children spin a grim but empowering story about a girl named liyana who must save her younger twin brothers from kidnappers who plan to sell them. For the africans, liyana is a derivative of the zulu term liyana, meaning ‘it is raining.’ in the mordvin language, the name could be inspired by the erzya term лияназ or liyanaz, which means ‘flax’ or ‘different.’
