The data from this study suggest that duration of the prescription rather than dosage is more strongly associated with ultimate misuse in the early postsurgical period. It quantifies the disconnect between provider perception and patient consumption by simultaneously surveying outlier prescribers and the consumption patterns of patients overprescribed opioids. Surgeons struggle with adequately treating their patients’ pain needs while being mindful of the risks of opioids.
