I'm a big fan of the option Obvious opportunities in a typical brokerage link would just be the usual three fund suggestions using etfs, for example from vanguard or whoever I'd start a newsletter, but it would only have one issue per year

Most plans force you to keep a minimum in one of the plan funds.
There are many mutual funds from other companies (like fidelity, schwab, blackrock, state street, northern trust, etc.) which are the equivalent or near equivalent of the vanguard etfs you want I would not bother with the brokeragelink if good funds with low expense ratios are offered in the standard 401k choices.
