I'm quite near sighted, but can easily pass the dmv test with my corrective lenses (i do have the restriction on my license, and have for the 37 years i've been licensed)
I have a couple of friends, however, with quirky vision issues, who might fail the very basic dmv test, but who can safely drive under certain circumstances, possibly during daylight hours only.
