If you feed a.c file to a c++ compiler, it will compile as cpp The steps to find your problem are.

.cc and.cxx is just an alternative to.cpp used by some compilers Just mean that cmake was unable to find your c/cxx compiler to compile a simple test program (one of the first things cmake tries while detecting your build environment) .hpp is an attempt to distinguish header files where there are significant c and c++ differences.

When i take a look at the batch script, it seems because of double quoting, used with escape character, caret (^).

Other file extensions used include.cxx and.c (capital c)

I believe bjarne stroustrup used.c originally .cpp is the name of the c preprocessor so it's unfortunate that it was used for c++ as well. I know that cxx is a variable (containing the compiler command to call), but i was wondering where this variable comes from The variable is not defined in the makefile and is not an environment variable.

What should i do to set the cxx compiler correctly Should i modify the cmakelist.txt file Should i change some configuration within vs code Note that the final build is done inside a docker container, and the default compiler version inside the container is version 14.

My os is centos which has a default gcc in path /usr/bin/gcc

But it is old, i need a new version of gcc So i install a new version in a new path /usr/local/bin/gcc But when i run cmake, it stil. Historically, the suffix for a c++ source file was.c

This caused a few problems the first time c++ was ported to a system where case wasn't significant in the filename Different users adopted different solutions Today, outside of the unix world, it's mostly.cpp Unix seems to use.cc more often

For headers, the situation is even more.

We could also name those variables however we want But since make already treats them magically in the implicit rules, those make good name choices Tested in ubuntu 16.04, gnu make 4.1 Append compiler flags the initial content from the cached cmake_cxx_flags variable is a combination of cmake_cxx_flags_init set by cmake itself during os/toolchain detection and whatever is set in the cxxflags environment variable

So you can initially call Please set cmake_cxx_compiler to a valid compiler path or name.
