Kenyatta was previously a member of the kenya africa national union (kanu), a political party that had led kenya to independence in 1963 While president of the nationalist kenya african union, jomo kenyatta was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in 1953 in alleged connection with the violent mau mau rebellion that began in 1952.
