I've had some pain/stiffness relief with voltaren gel for other things like my hands, but i doubt it works very well for post surgical pain.
How long will it take a daily regimen of voltaren gel to clear the body after it's stopped Voltaren gel has worked for my knees, but i have the stuff running out of my ears Every month and 1/2 my prescription pharmacy would send 15 more tubes of voltaren so now i have it in boxes on my shelves. Voltaren gel is normally not very effective
However it seems you are one of the lucky ones who is seeing good results Long term use of nsaids is not recommended due to multiple side effects You can read about nsaids here (scroll down the page). I think everyone is different and what works for some may or may not work for others
I do think voltaren gel does some good, in my neck and back.
