You have to be stopped and in neutral with your foot on the brake to engage this setting. Did any models that have been phased out recently have true 4wd 4wd is not the same as low range

To get out of low range, you typically have to be in neutral or park, switch to 4wd high or to 2wd, and then back up several feet.

A true 4wd will have a transfer case that locks the front drive train in with the back and often has a low range available as well Awd has a slipping type center differential so the front wheels can turn at a different speed than the back. The main difference in how it drives is why the engine is mounted differently
