Going back to faryn and speaking to him again (with sten in the party) worked, the journal still didn't update for some reason but i could actually open the chest I was able to acquire the sword from the chest, but the problem is that the option to gift it is isn't selectable, even in camp New comments cannot be posted.

I remember there being a glitch that if you talk to dwyn (essentially skipping one npc in the questline) the chest can not load properly
From the wiki page for the quest it is possible to get the key from dwyn (through intimidation or sten's presence) before speaking to faryn. You can just mosey right over from lake calenhad to redcliffe and dwyn will have it for you I found this one by accident on my very first playthrough, which was great because i wasn't high enough level for the beef gate in the frostbacks yet I was prepping up the town of redcliffe and walked into dwyn's. I called delta they said the faucets they sell at big box stores and plumbing stores are identical but why do seemingly all plumbers say they are not?
