The concept of the trinity can be seen as developing significantly during the first four centuries by the church fathers in reaction to theological interpretations known as adoptionism, sabellianism, and arianism. While the term is not used in the bible and is a later theological descriptor, trinity is an appropriate and helpful term to describe the unity and plurality of the persons of god.
